Fields of application of systemic constellations

By Thomas ThielUpdated:
In short

Systemic constellations can be used wherever relationship dynamics, roles or decisions play a part. The main fields of application are organisational constellations, team constellations, leadership coaching, the inner team, change processes, family constellations and group constellations.

Organisational constellations

Structures, power relations and decision paths become visible – often with surprising clarity. Leaders gain insight into the dynamics actually at work in their organisation, beyond organisation charts and official processes. On a digital constellation board, structures can be set up anonymously, scenarios saved as variants and the result documented.

Team constellations

Conflicts, role patterns and communication dynamics come to light. Who carries responsibility that is not theirs? Which subgroups have formed? Where is real communication missing? Team constellations answer these questions experientially – also at a distance when coach and team work remotely.

Leadership coaching

Leaders in complex roles often face ambivalence: responsibility towards the team, the organisation and their own values. Constellations help clarify these fields of tension and find coherent decisions. Different decision scenarios can be compared as variants before acting.

The inner team

Not only external systems but also inner experience can be set up. Personal parts – the driver, the critic, the protector, the visionary – can be shown in space and brought into dialogue. This is especially effective for decision conflicts and inner blockages. Every part gets its own figure; the ego view allows you to look literally through the eyes of each part.

Change processes

Change processes often fail because of invisible resistance and hidden loyalties. A constellation shows who benefits from the status quo, who fears the new, and which dynamics block or promote change. Stakeholder maps, fields of resistance and resources can be set up anonymously, repeated and documented over the whole course of a process.

Family constellations

Family constellations are the historical origin of the method and remain a core field of application. In systemic coaching they are used to make family imprints, loyalties and attachment patterns visible – even when the issue is initially professional. Modern practice works with hypotheses rather than interpretations (see Criticism and limits). A digital, anonymous setting can be especially helpful in online coaching where personal distance is desired.

Group constellations

Group constellations take place in seminars, supervision or training. Several participants set up a shared topic – with representatives or symbolically. In a group, particularly strong collective insights emerge: patterns become visible to everyone at once, and changes of perspective happen in the room. Online this is possible when all participants see the board in real time.

Digital in all fields

All these formats can be carried out with a digital constellation board – independent of location and without installation, directly in the browser.

Frequently asked questions

Who are systemic constellations suited for?

For coaches, supervisors, therapists and consultants who work with individuals, teams and organisations. Clients bring an issue, such as a decision, a conflict or a change.

Are constellations also suitable for one-to-one sessions?

Yes. With floor anchors, figures or a digital constellation board you can set up a constellation without a group and without representatives.
